The Power of Our Democracy

Last week on the discussion board, I asked a question on the Vision 2020 and I asked the youth to send me their views on the topic, most of them emailed me and told me they have lost hope on the vision 2020, some even made it straight that the Vision 2020 project would be the biggest flop of the century. As for me, I still believe that the Nigerian Dream can be achieved. We don't have to give up the hope. It is the hatred of change by most of our Leaders and youth of this country that is holding our progress back. We need to change our mentality because we are the change that we seek. However what does being “the change” mean if we are not willing to work towards changing things or if we are not willing to work at all but rather, point accusing fingers on Senator “A” and Governor “B” or sit at the comfort of our homes knowing that “we are the change”
One of the main obstacles to real development in Nigeria is the mentality of the Nigerian people, because we fail to realise that the solution lies with all of us, especially the youth. The only set of people speaking with one voice and one goal in Nigeria are the ruling elites, and today they are more powerful than the populace who outnumber them by hundreds of millions. The other option of getting to achieve the Nigerian dream, is youth empowerment, the government should invest their time and money on youth empowerment, instead of wasting money on things that would not benefit the future of our dear nation. But thank God for the “Nigerian Youth Dream Movement” who has taken the future of Nigeria as their own cup of tea, they plan to empower this youth because the so called selfish politician wants to make use of the youth who are jobless as their thugs’ .for instance Ekiti rerun election has shown us that the thugs are unemployed. That’s why I wrote on youth empowerment, few weeks back. So also I believe Every Nigerian youth needs to get civilised first. We are not civilised See what happened in South Africa or Ghana might not happen in Nigeria in the next 50years, except we take up the gauntlet and start taking the destiny of Nigeria into our hands, then things will change. We need to stop being armchair critics. People will always follow the man who knows where he is going. Everybody is hailing Fashola because he decided to be different. Change in Nigeria starts with me and you, The Bolshevik Revolution in Russia was hatched over some months in a room. Most of the guys that led the Russian Revolution were intellectuals i.e. Lenin, Trotsky e.t.c. They were just fed up with how the Russian Populace were being ruled by the Tsar and his cabinet. The good thing was that when Lenin and his men sparked off the revolution, they didn’t need to do much. Ordinary Russians seized the initiative and took their destinies into their hands. Russian soldiers who had just returned from fighting in the French Revolution joined the civilians in fishing out the corrupt leaders. Since June 12 1993, the "masses" have always known the meaning of democracy and how to use it. They voted, their choice was made, and their choice won. But then things changed, they lost hope in the electoral process and the power of their Votes, but until Nigerians realise it is their collective lack of responsibility that has helped keep the status quo, they will continue to suffer electoral mal-practice. The truth is, we can buy back our democracy and our stolen mandate, the time is coming, and as a matter of fact it has come, when some of youth will start acting out their ideas in Nigeria.
The destiny of Nigeria lies in our hands. No Policeman or soldier will shoot you for airing your views when he knows you're fighting for his children's future. Information is the key to great changes in Nigeria. Nigerians need to be informed on the power of their democracy in the language they can understand. The Nigerian psyche needs to be fixed, and as soon as the youth, start playing their part in this system of government, instead of continuing to pass blame to the politicians who are actually supposed to be under the people, not above, then we will achieve the Nigerian Dream. I believe the solution is truly that simple!
Every revolution that has happened in history started with concerned citizens bouncing off progressive ideas on each other. I want you to know that real change is coming to Nigeria very soon. I hope you join “THE NIGERIAN YOUTH DREAM MOVEMENT” To achieve that Goal of the Nigerian Dream. I BELIEVE IN THE NIGERIAN DREAM…..
