YOUTH EMPOWERMENT: SERIES TWO Career guidance a way of tackling Unemployment

In a developing state like Nigeria, you will find hundreds, if not thousands of unemployed graduates roaming about the streets looking for job. But in my own opinion, I believe the main solution to this problem is proper guidance whereby youths are given proper guidance on the career they choose.
Wrong guidance is one of the major factors that promote unemployment in Nigeria. You see in some family, where the parent tells the child, “I want you to be a lawyer, doctor, nurse” but naturally these child is talented in teaching or love to teach. But because the hype of teachers in this modern day Nigeria, it might not be compared with that of a lawyer, doctor e.t.c then here comes the well talented teacher becoming a lawyer but because he or she does not have a natural talent in soliciting or advocating. He or she might not perform well in that field, of which he or she might loose interest later, like the Yoruba proverb says “Abinibi yato si Ability” meaning natural talent is different from the one you learnt. A friend once told me how her dad was forcing a course of study on her, of which she was naturally talented in another field; I believe parent should give guidance to the child not force a career on them, just because they were victim of their own parent too. As a Nigerian Born and Breed Youth, Most time we were told by our parents that the purpose of studying is to get that job in that big company which only very few of us get. This serves as the main cause of unemployment because those who went to school to study building engineer or Zoology in school come out to look for jobs in Oil Company and Banks, so as to please their friends and family and they may end up not finding any, and to save themselves the shame, they venture into Yahoozey. In the case of Yahoozey, we have large number of youth (future leaders), who are into Yahoozey. They have seen it as livelihood since the government have no means of empowering them. Even a little child of six years knows or have seen some of our leaders on television or on the pages of newspaper been arraigned for misconduct or malfeasance, so what do you think is the faith of that little boy. His believes that fraud is no crime since the leaders are involved and nothing was done to them, so he can do it and go scot free, I heard that these days when the “men in black” catch you robbing people or stealing, you are told Yahoozey is a better act than robbing. But I totally object to that motion, the difference between Yahoozey and armed robbery is that an armed robber use weapons, while the “Yahoozey” or “419” or better still fraudsters use their brain. But they are all guilty of crime; Obtaining from another person through a forceful means, of which the criminal code of Nigeria will have anyone caught in that act to be jailed.
The only thing the government can do to curb unemployment in Nigeria is simply, creating an avenue for employment; giving the youth proper guidance on their career of choice. So also giving the youth insights and empowering them on plumbering works, Electrical works “Electrician”, Mechanical engineering “Mechanics” e.t.c. Often than not, these jobs are often underrated by the youth as menial jobs, but I know people who are making millions with this jobs, because they are satisfying 1% of the 150 million Nigerians, But some youths are too big to go into these venture, they want oil company money, which they might not get, they later end their life searching and giving up on life. The federal government should also create an avenue for jobs in rural area, so as to decrease the migration of youth to the urban area thereby causing mass unemployment. . I must also commend what Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola is doing in Lagos State; I mean the Mega City project going on. That is a good example of leadership. The project will create job Opportunity for thousands of lagosian and Nigerians. The project has made the Lagos state government to create jobs like; Latsma, Kai, Lamata, and lawma e.t.c. these are all state government initiative, not to mention the B.R.T Bus Drivers that Lagos state employed...... So unemployment in my own terms can be defined as a lack of career guidance on the part of the youth and much focus on other things than the youth (Future of Nigeria) by the government. I believe that the government, our parents and even we (The Youths) can help tackle unemployment through all these patterns and ways.
